A Few of my Favorite things.....

December is a great month to encourage your children to create! At home, students love to create cards and decorations around the house. Many students love being able to create art projects outside of school. Art activities are especially great on those cold days, when the kids they are stuck inside looking for something to do. This year think beyond toys that break or get boring shortly after Christmas, pick something that will spark creativity and build your child's imagination. Here are a few of my favorite gift ideas for your budding artist:
1. Sketch books and nice drawing pencil sets
2. Model Magic air dry clay (don't worry, it's not messy, and kids love it)

Fabulous Fifth Grade Artist!
Students will be spending the month of December honing their drawing skills. They have already created some fantastic landscapes and are working on one point perspective drawings.

Super Awesome Sixth Grade Year Long Artist!
Year long students have been to Vietnam and Sweden recently. That's right, while in Vietnam they learned about Trung Thu, a special children's festival following the Harvest Moon. Students made lanterns similar to those given to children during this holiday. Student's also learned about a special art from Sweden. I don't want to give to much away, since this project just might be found under the Christmas tree.

Rockin' Rotation Classes!
Students are nearing the completion of their Egyptian project. This has been such a huge undertaking. Students have done an amazing job and I am proud of them for keeping their enthusiasm focus on this project. I can't wait to see the results of their hard work!

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! Now it's time to get back to school, fall sports, and catching up with your friends, amd of course new classes and teachers!

For 5th graders it also means starting back in a new building. Feel free to ask any of your teachers any questions you have like; where is the closest restroom?, to when can I go to the library? to when is lunch? most of the time we have the answers, so remember your not the only one new to the building the entire 5th grade is, and they probably have the same questions.

Sixth graders, welcome back, this year is an important one for you. You will be preparing yourselves for Middle school. You were able to make class choices and will have the freedom to make some new choices this year in your classes. Be sure to take your responsibilities as a leader in the school serious. You are now role models, and should respect that position. If you see a new student who seems lost or has a question, help them out. Make this year a positive and successful year!
Students who need to work on art projects can stay after school for assistance. I am available until 4:15 almost everyday. Students may check with me for availability.

Welcome to a new year in art!

Well as always, summer always goes way to fast, but its exciting to see everyone again! I love seeing the new faces of 5th graders and getting to know them. And it's fun to see my sixth graders, seeing their new hairstyles, new looks and of course how much they have grown over the summer.

This year, I will be teaching 3 different courses:

5th Grade- Art through out time- classes meet every other day. And we will be covering art beginning in the Middle ages to the Present.

6th Grade Rotation Art- Journey Across Time in Art All 6th grade students will be enrolled in this class. Students will come to this class every forth school day, rotating each day to a different specials class. In this class we will work closely to the Social Studies curriculum, covering art in many of the time periods students will be learning about. Some of those areas will include Ancient Egyptian, China, and Japan.

6th Grade Year Long Art- World Cultural Arts. This is an elective course. Students enrolled in this class will come to class everyday all year long. We will cover a range of cultures including the South Pacific Islands, Russia, Sweeden, Australia, Mexico, just to name a few. We will also expand on some of the countries covered in Rotation Art.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail me or call.

BLOG THOUGHTS #3

Vincent Vangogh's "Postmaster"

Vangogh thought a lot of his postmaster, so much that he painted several paintings of him. Vincent said he is a "good soul and so wise and so full of feeling and so trustful." He did several versions of Roulin the postman.

If you could paint a masterpiece of an important person in your everyday life who would you paint? and why?

Blog Thoughts....

This is a painting called "The Maids of Honor" by a Spanish artist, Diego Velazquez. He painted in the Baroque time period. The mystery behind this painting is who or what is he painting? If you look to the left of the painting, you will see the artist himself and we can see the back of a painting. In the center of the painting is a little girl, she is the young daughter of the King and Queen. Is Velazquez painting a picture of her? Or is he painting the King and Queen? If you look deep into the painting at the back wall, there appears to be a mirror with a reflection of a couple in it. Could this be the King and Queen? Are they posing for him? Or is it not a mirror at all, but another painting? Who are all the other people? You may notice one lady who is short in the group. She was the assistant to the princess, because of her height, they thought she would be perfect to help the little princess.
Can you solve the mystery of this painting? Who or what do you think Velazquez is painting? Why are their so many people in the picture?
